Industrial tourism: thousands of tourists aboard the train from Banovici

A unique, almost European idea on building a narrow-gage tourist railroad was born in the northeastern part of Bosnia, precisely in Banovici. The project "A tourist narrow-gage railway with the mining museum and railways Banovici” is the first project of its kind in Bosnia and beyond.

The project entitled " A conceptual design for a mining museum and tourist railways narrow- gage 0.76 m Banovici-Mackovac- Zlaca, ", leads to an upcoming Invitation to bid.

The first stage of this project is building a narrow-gage tourist railway between Banovici-Mackovac, planned for 2010 and long approximately 6000 km. The second construction stage is a railroad section Mačkovac-Zlače about 4,000 km long.

Within framework of the project, a mining museum is planned, with unique exhibits, as well as improvised pit entrance, an opportunity for industrial tourism and architects, giving them an insight into "a unique approach to surface exploitation" as named by distinguished professors, experts for the sector.

The tourist tracks fit the existing free rails which was previously carrying coal. Construction work to construct the museum have already started while the tourist trains are already in operation carrying thousands of tourists from Germany, America, Switzerland, representatives of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, travel agencies and schools who soak in the scenery while taking detailed shots.

The fact is that Banovici mines have significant deposits of mining and railway rarities. Following world examples, railway tourism becomes a motive to use history and a well-known mining potential of the area, even after the mines loosing their true function.
