Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina initiated the construction of the railway line between Capljina - Niksic, the old route of the narrow-gauge railroad, on which was racing once popular "Ciro".
The route of the Adriatic-Ionian corridor that leads from the Kvarner, Dalmatia, Herzegovina and Montenegro to Greece, is especially important to eastern Herzegovina, since it joins the railroad Ploce - Sarajevo.
Professional circles believe that the Adriatic line should extend over to the areas of Capljina, Ljubuski and Grude in the direction of Knin, where it would connect on to the railway line Zagreb - Split.
Industrial development
The preparations of the Physical plan of the Federation and the Cantons are in the pipeline, incorporating the possibility that the railway line from Capljina across western Herzegovina in the direction of Knin enters the plans.
Experts say that all development plans should contain such capital transportation projects. The railway Niksic - Capljina - Knin at the Adriatic-Ionian corridor would much better connect Herzegovina, and the entire B&H to Croatia and Montenegro. Economic entities in the West Herzegovina, welcome the idea of building the Capljina - Knin. The train route from Capljina through Ljubuski and Grude towards Knin to the Western Herzegovina would be a very good connection to the railways Ploce - Sarajevo and Zagreb - Split and even further into Central Europe, or eastern Herzegovina and Montenegro.
Bauxite mines and companies that are dealing with the processing of stone welcome the construction of the railway line through the western Herzegovina. This line would encourage further industrial development of this region.
Western Herzegovina during the times of former Yugoslavia, was isolated from the transport. Building this railway would completely correct that injustice.
Foreign investment
Herzegovina is one of the ten most attractive regions for foreign investment and construction of the railway line between Niksic - Čapljina - Knin, the Adriatic-Ionian corridor, would make that southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina even more attractive to the foreign investment.
