Buckwheat- BH opportunity for development and green business

September 3, 2010 - Buckwheat, typically a mountain plant, abundant in proteins, antioxidants, B group vitamins and fibers that help in treating stress, insomnia, diabetes ..is increasingly becoming a lucrative green business in BiH.
Lately, buckwheat has made a comeback on tables of healthy-food eaters, while the results of numerous scientists confirm its value as an eco, organic food.
Mehonic Samir owner of the organic farm "Eco heljda" (Eco buckwheat) and the largest producer of buckwheat and buckwheat products in Bosnia, says our country has excellent conditions to grow the crop.
„Prospects to grow it here are enormous, although we are talking about a strenuous and hard work when the harvest takes up to 20 hours a day. Buckwheat cannot be grown in plain, flat terrain and B-H has large areas of 700 meters above sea level to be used for this purpose, "says Mehonjic, stressing that the state has to become more involved in the production of buckwheat in a manner which will allow financial incentives to producers and project monitoring.
He believes that for development of organic production and meeting the market needs, a symbiosis between the relevant ministries and manufacturers is a good start.
"’Eko heljda’ as the first organic farm in B-H is a good marketing strategy for healthy foods, and people have accepted it as such. We can say that we have met all the standards in what is called an organic production and hygiene. I believe that to be a minimum of requirements when one produces what we produce. People have recognized this and always come back for more of our products, "said Mehonic, explaining that ‘Eco heljda’ because of the increased needs in the domestic market, can no longer export to Sweden.

"We have in our offer 60 products on the basis of various buckwheat extracts - flour, pasta, well known pillows and mattress filled with buckwheat, the top product heljdopita that won the hearts of customers, "says Mehonic who plans to expand production of buckwheat in the ongoing year, expecting the plant to became the latest economic trend and money-making opportunity to export.
